The weather gods were good to us this past weekend and provided two days of lovely spring weather; perfect for the dogs and perfect for us too!

Saturday
Saturday saw an entry of 30 dogs. We had lots of FTE's (first time entered) join us including a very enthusiastic Border Collie named Ripley who comes from a family of racing whippets. Ripley was so happy to finally have a day of racing for himself and we hope he and Lynne will continue to come race with us in the future!
Also joining us for the first time were the Silken Windhounds. We had an entry of 9 silkens, all seasoned racers.

Livermore - Sunday
On Sunday we had another beautiful day of spring weather in Livermore. We also had a larger entry of 34 eager dogs all ready to burn rubber on the race track!
The mixed breeds came in droves, resulting in three separate Mixed Breed breed stakes. Dot headed the team of 16 inch MB's with a strong High Score finish, while the ever determined little Lola lead the team of MB shorties with her first High Score in meet. Cindee showed newcomer Peaches how it's done with a perfect score of 22 meet points, but even though she's a newcomer Peaches pulled off one of best FTE runs of the day; way to go Peaches!
Robin the Corgi took home his first High Score award in our Mixed Div B and little Leeroy the dachshund ran a personal best against his buddy Bandit for a second place finish. Our Mixed Div C saw two strong running FTEs, Ranger the Mini Schnauzer and Squeak the JRT. Ranger took home the high score ribbon but I think Squeak will be giving him a run for his money from now on!
Two of our Norwiches finally took home their first SRCh points and SR1/SR2 legs as did the Tollers, led by big boy Drake. The Cairns made their breed stake debut this weekend as well. We hope to see more of them in the future!
We had an entry of 6 silkens on Sunday, and Helios surprised no one by taking home yet another High Score in meet.
Cairn Terriers
1. Ed, 20 meet points
2. Bingo, 8 meet points
3. Honey, 0 meet points

Learning to Retrieve
2/19/10 - Well, I am not sure how it is going. So far, after several weeks, I still don't have a retrieve from her.
I have chosen to only use one article, a yellow ball that is small enough for her small mouth. At first I did the clicker every time she went near it, and eventually she got to where she would put it in her mouth, but only for a second or two, then gradually she would hold it for another second. That is as far as I can get. She will then drop it and get distracted by something else. I have tried over and over, and can't get her to hold it longer. What she does is to drop the ball and then look for the treat. Obviously, I don't treat her for that. And finally I stopped the game when she did that and brought her inside. I tried that for several times, and she still would not hold it longer. She seems more interested in the treat than the ball.
Soooooo, I started something more. I took out the treats all together and just used the ball as play and reward for doing other things like her practice for her obedience class. That is where I am right now.
In general, she doesn't play with any toys or is not focused on any objects. She doesn't put things in her mouth. She is not a chewer. She doesn't play tug, even though I have tried many times.
Since I have her in this obedience class that uses clickers, she has become more focused on training and doing things. What I have seen so far since I have had her, is that prior to me getting her, she had no positive experience with training, and probably no formal training at all. So, training seemed to be a foreign concept to her.
However, since she has taken to the tracking training so well, practically training herself, I know she loves to learn and loves to do things. I will keep trying to figure out how to get her to retrieve. I have a feeling that, since she is not big on having things in her mouth, it won't be a natural thing. I will have to keep working on teaching her this.

Basic Obedience Class, January 2010, Braveheart Dog Training, San Leandro
I have the permission from Braveheart Dog Training to post the subheads of each week's homework. This is straight from their handouts, thus are copyrighted. You can find out more about Braveheart Dog Training at www.braveheartdogtraining.com.
This class is one of many classes I have taken from BDT. Dino has taken many classes there, and I continue to take Dino to the drop in Conformation Class on Tuesdays.
My goal for Dot is to eventually get used to be inside a building, and eventually do the Conformation classes. Those classes are held in a very small building and the dogs are very close together.
Class #1:
Nothing in Life is Free:
Finding Your Dog's Reward
Delivery Treats/Holding the Leash
Charge the Clicker
Earth to Dog
Sit
Name Recognition
Pick a Release Word
Class #2:
Leash Walking
Recalls
Voluntary Attention
Settle
Sit
Class #3:

Watch Me
Leave it
Loose Leash Walking
Name Recognition
Recalls
Class #4
Class #5
Class #6 (bring camera)
